About

I’m Sharon, admirer of old furniture and the possibilities of making them even greater, one-of-a-kind pieces, to be enjoyed for years and years. I like the character of antique and vintage furniture pieces. They have stylized shapes, lots of details and some of the older pieces offer unique functionality (e.g., washstands, telephone tables, old school desks with inkwells, barrister bookcases).

Solid wood pieces are the best finds. Whether at auctions, estate sales, second-hand or thrift stores, or by the roadside, I am drawn to these beauties.  Hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, maple, white oak, and black ash are my absolute favourites. Pieces with dovetail joints or the pattern of burled wood are such a coup!

The icing on the cake in these old pieces is keyholes with the original working key, turned legs, lovely old brass or crystal drawer pulls, and especially wood moustache drawer handles.

Whether Queen Anne, Shaker, Empire, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, or Mid-Century, they all have their own appeal. With a little imagination and creativity, or borrowing someone else’s, these pieces can be changed into one-of-a-kind statements to enjoy every day. The changes can be minor or dramatic.

Through this blog, I hope to pique your interest in older furniture, show you some of the furniture pieces I pick up along the way, share with you some of the transformations I do, as well as my mistakes, and how you can put a room together mixing older pieces with newer pieces, creating a great look and vibe.  Of course you can mix those iconic white IKEA Lack end tables with a charming older secretariat desk!

A recent transformation – it was a dark-stained, heavily varnished piece before

I am not a furniture historian or an accomplished furniture restorer (maybe one day). I am someone who appreciates the history of a piece and wonders who owned it before. I am someone who will research refinishing techniques and try them out, making them better if I can. I am a bit of a perfectionist. I am someone who knows the joy a transformed piece makes in the home. I am someone who likes unique pieces and an eclectic look that creates a warm and inviting feeling.

I hope my blog gives you inspiration to take another look at the quality pieces made a long time ago and how they can fit into your home today. You can create a home of pieces with history, quality and personality. You can also take pride in yourself for what you accomplished all on your own, or with the help of your partner or friends, and for saving a very beautiful piece from the landfill.

Hope you find your next furniture treasure soon.

Happy upcycling!

Best,

Sharon
